Green Up

Carbon Catchers? Yes!

There’s a UK company that’s pioneering carbon capture in the UK.

How do they do that?

They study each client’s energy use, and determine the best products to help not only reduce their carbon footprint but lower their utility bills at the same time.

Just look at these photos of the before and after of a recycling company (already a green business). Big difference right?

You bet it was!

They installed a IP65 low energy lighting system enabling the recycling center to save 46% in their energy costs! The expected payback? About 2 1/2 years.

That’s a great deal!

They help not just big warehouses, but office buildings, and new commercial construction too. But wait! They didn’t just stop with lighting, no, they also looked at the entire operation and submit suggestions to lower energy costs.

Such as:
Switching to a near paperless system
Car Sharing systems
Alternative transportation methods
and more…

This is a great model for all of us to follow, whether we’re based here or overseas.

Winter’s Coming

Monday, October 4th, 2010

Winter is coming, and it seems to be coming a little faster than expected. Just this morning I had ice crystals on my car!

That means it’s time to work on getting the house up to speed for the winter.

That means bringing in the plants that have rested on the porch, turning over pots (so they don’t freeze and crack), bringing in the water hoses, covering or housing the lawnmower and oiling down the shovels and rakes for winter storage.

It’s also time to look at what needs to be done to the house itself.

Do you have enough attic insulation? Adding additional home insulation is a great way to beat old man winter. Attic insulation, also called loft insulation, is worth about 3 R-value per inch (thickness). Adding R-value saves YOU money!

Do you have any exposed water pipes? Adding insulation to those pipes helps keep the heat in (from the hot water tank to the faucet). Pipe insulation (aka pipe lagging) is a MUST if you have exposed water pipes anywhere it gets cold! I have insulation on my outdoor water pump! Helps keep it from freezing!
