Last month I was tooling through the countryside when as I crested a hill, I saw a field with hundreds of buffalo.
It was a thrilling site.
Can you even imagine what it must have been like when buffalo roamed free across the plains?
Today there are about 400,000 bison in commercial herds. This is over 90% of the entire US population. There are now about 70 conservation herds in the US containing about 30,000 head. This number pales in comparison to the tens of millions that roamed here in their heyday. The next two decades will be instrumental in restoring the American bison’s population and diversity from it’s current “Near Threatened” condition.
More land must become available to free roaming herds.
