Oklahoma Wind Projects

Oklahoma’s wind projects are breezing right along.

The Oklahoma Wind Power Initiative is a collaborative project by the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University and is funded by the Oklahoma Department of Commerce, the US Department of Energy, the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University.

There are eight distinct projects:

Blue Canyon Wind Power LLC (Phase 1):
Went into operation in December 2003
Total of 74.25 MW
45 NEG Micon 1.65 MW wind turbines
Enough power for about 20,000 homes
Electricity purchased by Western Farmer Electric Cooperative (WFEC)

Sleeping Bear Wind Farm:
Began commercial operation in August 2007
Total of 94.5 MW
45 Suzlon 2.1 MW turbines
Enough power for about 28,000 homes
Electricity purchased by PSO (Developed by Chermac Energy Corporation)

Blue Canyon Wind Power LLC (Phase II):
Began commercial operation in December 2005
Total of 151.5 MW
84 Vestas 1.8 MW wind turbines
Enough power for about 41,000 homes
Electricity purchased by AEP/PSO

Buffalo Bear Wind Farm:
Began commercial operation in December 2008
Total of 18.9 MW
8 Suzlon 2.1 MW turbines
Enough power for about 6,000 homes
Electricity purchased by Western Farmer Electric Cooperative (WFEC) (Developed by Cherman/Edison Mission Energy)

Weatherford Wind Energy Center (WWEC):
Began commercial operation in May 2005
Total of 147 MW
98 GE 1.5 MW wind turbines
Enough power for about 44,000 homes
Electricity purchased by AEP/Public Service Company of Oklahoma (PSO)

FPL Energy Sooner Wind LLC:
Began commercial operation in September 2003
Total of 102 MW
68 GE 1.5 MW wind tubines
Enough power for about 30,000 homes
Electricity purchased by Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority (OMPA) & Oklahoma Gas and Electric (OG&E)

Centennial Wind Farm:
Began commercial operation in December 2006
Total of 120 MW
80 GE 1.5 MW turbines
Enough power for about 36,000 homes
Electricity purchased by OG&E (Developed by Invenergy LLC)

Red Hills Wind Farm:
Began commercial operation in March 2009
Total of 123 MW
82 Acciona 1.5 MW turbines
Enough power for about 40,000 homes
Electricity purchased by Western Farmer Electric Cooperative (WFEC)

The wind just keeps blowin’ down the plain here in Oklahoma, making Oklahoma a prime spot for wind energy.
