Kites began in China long ago. Artisans created them with rice paper and silk. Today, in China, one man is starting his own ‘new’ tradition. He’s making kites from plastic bags. Han Fushan looked upon several different properties for today’s kites and decided that the easiest and cheapest material around was plastic, and more specifically, plastic bags.
He uses the thicker plastic bags for heavy duty kites and the thin plastic bags for easy breezy days. It takes him a couple of days to make one from scratch and he now owns more than 600. He shows up daily at a local park to fly his kites and has developed a decent fan base.
China today tosses 300 tons of plastic bags every day.
That is potentially a lot of kites!
