Fall Gardening Workshop – Penn Square

Harvest greens all winter!

Have you ever wished you could pop out to the garden for fresh spinach, lettuce and carrots – in January? With a few simple techniques, you can!

Come to this group-led workshop as you and your fellow gardeners share tips and ideas for fall and winter gardening. We’ll also build a simple but effective miniature bamboo “hoop house” over a raised garden bed to protect our vegetables through the winter.

What: Fall gardening workshop
When: Saturday August 28th, 8:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.
Where: NW OKC near Penn Square Mall (RSVP for address)
Cost: $5 donation to Sustainable OKC, a 501(c)3 non-profit

Douglas Tallamy Comes to Oklahoma

Douglas Tallamy, author of the award-winning book, Bringing Nature Home; How You Can Sustain Wildlife with Native Plants will be speaking at the OKC Zoo Education Auditorium on August 18th and The Tulsa Garden Center on August 19th. His book makes the powerful argument that each of us, no matter the size of our yard, can greatly increase biodiversity by planting natives and making simple changes in our landscaping habits.

Doug is a professor of Entomology at the University of Delaware, has spoken on NPR and is a frequent speaker at venues across the country.

Because the zoo generously donated use of their facility there is no charge for the OKC event, but they’d like to have an idea of how many to expect. You may call 405-255-1707 for a reservation or leave a note at marilyn@wildthingsnursery.com Pre-registering will put your name in the pot for door prizes.

In Tulsa you may make reservations by calling the Tulsa Garden Center at 918-746-5125. There is a $5 charge in Tulsa. There will also be a raffle and great door prizes.

Both venues will have native plants and books available, doors open at 6:15, Doug will speak at 7:00.

Saint’s Farmer’s Market

Saints recently announced the opening of a fresh, locally grown produce market, a collaborative effort by Urban Agrarian LLC and St. MidTown MarketAnthony Hospital on the Saints campus in MidTown.

The MidTown Market at Saints, a farmer’s market-style outdoor offering, is located in the hospital’s East Plaza at Walker and 9th Street from 2:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. each Friday through October. All members of the community are invited. Plenty of free parking is available adjacent to the market.

MidTown Market at Saints is the result of creative input from numerous representatives of Downtown OKC, Inc., the Oklahoma City Planning Department, Greater Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce, OSU, and members of the Midtown Redevelopment Corporation board.

You can expect to find an array of healthy products such as: leafy greens including swiss chard, spinach, lettuces, a variety of root vegetables including kohlrabi, beets, radishes, first of the season strawberries, organic mushroom variety, and hydroponic tomatoes.

Additional offerings include heritage breed free range hen eggs, local whole wheat and baked items, canned products including jams, jellies, relishes, pickles, juice, and soup, peanut butter, raw honey, cheese, locally roasted and organically grown coffee.

Live plants such as tomatoes transplants, herbs, okra transplants, flowers and ornamentals will also be featured.
