Lincoln County: So You Want To Grow Grapes

Thinking about becoming a grape farmer? Sign up for a half-day workshop to learn what it takes to start and maintain your own vineyard!
Participants will also receive a copy of the Oklahoma Vineyard Establishment Handbook and the Pocket Guide to Diseases and Insects.

OSU & Lincoln County grape growers present “So You Want to Grow Grapes”. It’s a field day for beginners!
When: October 9th
Where: Perkins Field Station, Perkins OK
What time: 9 – 1

You’ll get to hear Eric Stafne introduce site and variety selection (Pt 1) and an overview of vineyard management (Pt 2). William McGlynn follows with fruit quality and harvest timing. Next Lisa Overall will talk about Oklahoma grape insects followed by Damon Smith discussing Oklahoma grape diseases. After which there will be a short lunch break (with sandwiches and drinks). A panel discussion/question and answer session will start up during/after lunch followed by a vineyard visit.

Slow Food – HARN – OKC

The Friends of Slow Food OKC want YOU to make plans to attend the Slow Food OKC’s 6th Annual Fall Picnic. The event is scheduled for Sunday, October 3rd at the Harn Homestead from 4-7pm.

The picnic is an incredible family style celebration of Oklahoma ’s food traditions. It is also a great place to enjoy friends, family and fellow
Slow Fooders and people who care about eating well and local! Each year we host over 400 people and this year will be no exception.

Please book early – we work with local producers for many of the ingredients and need to know if you plan to come!

Food will be prepared by some of the top Oklahoma chefs using the finest local ingredients. The menu is sure to be delicious and will be a gourmet twist on traditional picnic concepts. We will have beer and wine as well as non-alcoholic beverages. Prairie Thunder Bread will be featured. Beer will be generously provided by Coop Ale and Choc Beer as well as fine wines. We will serve family style at 4:30pm – please arrive promptly. For those who cannot arrive by 4:30, we will make every attempt to have seating and food service for you.

Tickets are $30 per person without alcoholic beveragesl/ $35 if you’d like
to drink beer and wine-check or paypal in advance. We ask you to
please reserve early – we try to offer as much locally produced food as
possible, which means we can’t just run over to the store to buy the picnic
foods. Children 10 and under are free.

Sustainable Restaurant Workshop – Tulsa

The Oklahoma Tourism Department is holding a free sustainable restaurant workshop on October 11. Sponsors are Sustainable Tulsa and ChooseJobsTulsa.com and the whole ‘main course’ is being conducted by Encouraging Conservation in Oklahoma (ECO) and hosted by Elote Cafe (downtown Tulsa.)

ECO is the state’s sustainable travel program and is a partnership between the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department and the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality.

The workshop will include an overview of the ECO program and personal assistance in answering questions regarding the application process. Content will be tailored to attendees and their restaurant’s operations. The workshop is sponsored by Sustainable Tulsa and ChooseJobsTulsa.com.

ECO is a sustainability certification and educational program in Oklahoma for hotels, lodges, B&B’s, restaurants, events and attractions. ECO’s goal is to encourage sustainable business practices and promote eco-minded tourism partners across the state. ECO has established a voluntary program that certifies, recognizes and promotes travel and tourism related businesses and organizations that have made a commitment to reducing their environmental impact in Oklahoma.

“Now more than ever, travelers are looking for green options and the ECO program meets that need,” said Hardy Watkins, executive director of the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department. “This workshop provides tools and support to the restaurant industry. The ECO program works to engage this industry through certification, marketing opportunities and educational components.”
