Hmm, we won’t be going anywhere for a while. That tree has frozen and fallen right smack dab in the middle of the driveway and it’s the only way out…

Hope the chainsaw actually starts…

Tu Bishvat = Arbor Day

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

An acquaintance of mine mentioned that January 30th is Arbor Day.

Arbor Day in January?

Yes! January 30th is Arbor Day in the Hebrew community. It’s called Tu Bishvat or the 15th of Shvat (a month in the Hebrew calendar) and is one of the four “New Years” mentioned in the Mishneh or the oral 5 Books of Moses.

Traditionally it’s celebrated by eating fruits, especially dates, figs, raisins as well as almonds and carob. The almond tree begins to bloom now in Israel and many people celebrate the day by planting tree seedlings.

It’s a great celebration. You don’t have to be Jewish to celebrate trees.

Thanks to Ros of Jerusalem for sharing this information with me.

Campus Corner Green Store

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

There’s a new eco-minded store on Campus Corner in Norman (that’s Oklahoma for you non-Okies) that carries sustainable items.

Birdie is the new store and it’s filled with flowers, sustainable apparel, housewares as well as gifts.

The store is filled with organic, fair trade, items made from recycled content or made by hand. You’ll find organic cotton, handmade denim and jewelry, even ceramics and artwork.

The flowers in the shop come from the family farm in McAlester.

If you’re in Norman, be sure to stop in and look around!
