Pave Paradise

Suburbia is where the developer bulldozes out the trees, then names the streets after them.

~Bill Vaughn

Not too far from where I live, is a nice undeveloped corner at a major intersection. One corner has a Sonic drive-in, another a feed store. One corner is wooded with blackjacks and typical cross-timbers, a cedar tree here and there. The other corner holds some nice large old trees and lots of prairie grass. In the summertime, there’s a fireworks stand there, and the rest of the year, you’ll sometimes see the sheriff’s deputies parked there.

I came by the other day and someone had bulldozed all the big old trees. Sadness crept across my face. I stopped at Sonic and asked about the corner lot.

They bulldozed those wonderful trees…

for a Dollar store.

Sad, isn’t it.

How Far Will You Drive For Cheaper Gas?

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Can you save money by driving across town to buy gas?

Well maybe.  IF you were headed over to that side of town anyway. But, it you have to go out of your way x number of miles, then no. You’re better off buying gas somewhere along your daily route.

For instance, if gas right down the street is $1.75 and I know I need to buy about 12 gallons, then I can guestimate that I’ll spend about $21.00 to buy gas.

Gas across town, 6 miles each way, is selling for $1.68.  $1.68 times 12 gallons is $20.16, plus the 12 miles that I drove there back and forth to get the gas, plus the time it takes to drive back and forth.

Is it worth it to save 84 cents?

That’s almost a can of Dr Pepper, but, no, for me it’s better to just go ahead and get the gas that’s nearby.

What’s your stance on near-gas versus far-gas?

Garden Inside

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Have you seen the little plastic lighted greenhouse growing containers? The most popular one is called Aero-Garden. It’s becoming more and more popular, especially among apartment and condo dwellers.

They can now grow some of their own herbs and veggies!

Aero Garden is a self contained hydroponic system complete with a grow light. While it’s not big enough to grow a Big Bertha tomato plant, you can grow a smaller variety of tomato plant, salad greens, peppers, and herbs, lots of herbs.

It’s a great idea for those who love the taste of home-grown vegetables but lack outside growing space.
