Gravitational Time Dilation

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

A friend said to me, “My, but this day is l-o-n-g.”

Another friend piped up with “Really, my day is really scooting along.”

I said “Must be the gravitational time dilation.”

Their faces grew surprised and they looked at me like I was insane.

“Oh, I’m sorry I’ve been watching Dr. Who again.”TARDIS

They looked at each other, certain that I was verifiably crazy.

I said. “You know, Doctor Who, travels around time and space in a TARDIS.” Their faces still spoke volumes. “You know, a TARDIS, time and relative dimensions in space.”

“Oh never mind…..”

This short nearly one sided conversation led me to believe that once a geek – always a geek. My favorite movies growing up were the old black and white science fiction movies. I loved the original War of the Worlds, Forbidden Planet, and It Came from Outer Space.

In the sixties it was TV shows, Lost in Space, It’s About Time, The Invaders and of course the original series of Star Trek. I loved Outer Limits and Time Tunnel. I read Bradbury’s Martian Chronicles and Fahrenheit 451.

I watched all the Star Trek series, read Asimov and Clarke and even read the Physics of Star Trek. I went on to become a Gatehead, a Stargate fan. I even married a Trekker.

So, in the best Occam’s razor style, the simplest answer is most likely correct, I am a sci-fi nerd.

Don’t get me started on Schrödinger’s cat!

Back To School Means Shopping For Clothes

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

That means shopping for back to school clothes.  There are ways to help save on the time and expense of shopping.  Here’s what I do.Back to School

A week or so before we plan to head to the mall, I have the kids try on all their clothes. Yes, every single solitary piece.

When you have them do this, you’ll discover that many many articles of clothing have become too small over the summer.  These you can toss into the “give to charity’ pile.

You’ll find many pieces stained and others that need repair.  If you’re the kind of person that will actually take the time to remove the stains or replace missing buttons, then go ahead and make a pile for that.  If not, they can probably go in the trash, that is if they aren’t good enough for charity.

You can also toss last years fashion faux pas into the charity bin as well.  This will leave you with the clothes that actually fit and are wearable.  These you’ll separate into different classes, a pile for pants or jeans, a pile for tops etc.

There will be some clothes that your child will say that no matter what they will never wear it.  They hate it.  Don’t question it, you know that you have clothes that you don’t like yourself.  Toss it into the charity pile.

From the good pile of pants or jeans, have your child pick out a pair then look thru the tops to see if there is anything to wear with it.   Hopefully, together be able to find at least two tops for every bottom allowing extra outfits or looks from one pair of pants.

Once you’ve joined up the bottoms with the tops, take a count.  Is there enough clothing to last your child a week, or two?  Is there enough to last from laundry day to laundry day?  If so, you’re done.  If not, you can quickly determine that you need more jeans or you need more tops by the number of completed ‘put together’ outfits and  items left unpaired in the piles.

You can then make a shopping list from the work you just did.  You may determine that you need three pairs of jeans and only one versatile top.  Or you may discover your child has really grown over the summer and needs five new pair of jeans and ten new tops!

Be sure to go thru the underwear too.  Nothing worse than trying to wear underwear two sizes too small!

Don’t forget to check the shoes!

With a prepared shopping list in hand, you’ll be better prepared to spend your back to school clothing allowance wisely.

Natural Bug Repellents

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

I don’t know about you, but I hate bugs!  Some bugs are attracted by the carbon dioxide that our bodies emit, both from our breath as well as our sweat.  Annoying gnats flying around your face, pesky flies after your food, and mosquitoes after their daily blood feast, yuck!

So what do you do?  You pick up a can of bug repellent.  But then, you read the label, and think YIKES!!  Do I really want to put this stuff on my skin?

The back to basics movement has created a multitude of small businesses that create natural bug sprays.   They create their products with essential oils that work with nature to repel those bugs.

For my own personal spray, I use one that is made with lemon, geranium and eucalyptus essential oils in a base of witch hazel although distilled water makes a good base too.  It lasts for hours and keeps those pesky bugs away. I have friends begging me to make some more for them.

There are also natural bug sprays made from citronella.  These work well too.  The latest essential oil determined to be effective in repelling bugs is catnip.  It’s expensive though, and in my opinion, a bit ‘smelly’, but it has been shown to work better than DEET. Each person is different, so you might want to try a couple different brands of natural bug spray to find one that’s right for you.

Toss out that greasy chemical based personal bug spray and try a bug repellant made with nature’s own essential oils.
